Phalaris brachystachys
This
is an annual grass species from Portugal, the Mediterranean and Canary
Islands that has been introduced to California and a few other US
areas. Found
to have the highest alkaloid amounts by Festi and Samorini's study and
confirmed by many others, this species is now much sought after for its
ornamental qualities.
Livestock should not feed on this grass due to the extremely high alkaloidal content of 3%. This is now known to be the ideal species for those interested in the grasses of the genus Phalaris. The grass can grow to 1-2' in height. Those growing this grass find that if allowed to go to seed it will reseed itself and come back each year. Studies of the species in Spain as an undesired weed occurring among wheat crop show that it has the ability to aggressively increase its own populations. We provide a tried and true strain of Phalaris brachystachys which is becoming quite popular. |
